All styles have their own distinct characteristics, with some more elaborate than others. In choosing the right style, you have to consider the overall style or ambience of the room that you are trying to create, matching it with the other pieces of furniture. You have to keep in mind, though, that some styles are harder to find and more expensive than others.
Here are the most popular antique furniture styles available:
Art Noveau
The Art Noveau style began in Vienna in 1878 and is the most modern of all the antique styles. In fact, some do not consider it antique, at all. It is characterized by curves, spirals, natural floral forms and an overall irregular, free-flowing design.
Chinese
Chinese furniture comprises the bulk of antique Asian furniture and is perhaps one of the most distinct styles, owing to its complex, decorative carvings and rich colors. It is often made of bamboo, cypress, oak and hardwoods native to China.
Chippendale
The Chippendale style, named after Thomas Chippendale, is one of the most popular antique styles and is widely reproduced. It developed in colonial America in 1750 and is futher divided into different styles depending on the region in America where it orginated from.
Chippendale chairs are particularly a favorite among antique furniture collector but you can also find some antique wardrobes in Chippendale style.
Gothic
The Gothic style began in France, characterized by dark stain and a grand design that makes one think the piece of furniture belongs in a cathedral.
Louis XIV
Also known as the French Baroque style, this is the most extravagant style, characterized by round forms, curved lines and lavish ornamentation, so if you want to feel like royalty in your bedroom, you might want to get a Louis XIV antique wardrobe.
Queen Anne
The Queen Anne style dates back to 1720, with cabriole legs being its most distinct feature. It is also known for its simple elegance.
Rococo
Also known as the Louis XV style, Rococo furniture is not as grand as Louis XIV yet still elegant with interlacing shell, plant and flower decorations.
Victorian
Victorian furniture is usually gold-trimmed and is known for its ornate curved or scrolled design and intricate carvings.
William and Mary
Named after English monarchs, yet influenced by the Dutch, William and Mary furniture are mainly made of burled walnut and have turned legs.
